Amoxicillin, which is used to treat chest infections; penicillin; chloramphenicol for conjunctivitis; omeprazole, an antacid; and the painkiller gabapentin are among the commonly-prescribed drugs Mr Patel is making a loss on.In the past few months, the wholesale price of omeprazole has risen from 80p to £3 for a pack of 28, according to the pharmacist, who said the Drug Tariff did not reflect this hike.
Mr Patel dispenses around 600 packs of omeprazole a month, making him a total loss of more than £1,200.Perversely, the busier Hodgson Pharmacy is, the more money Mr Patel stands to lose: “Surely more people coming through the doors is better for you – that makes logical sense. But in one way the more people that come through the door… the deeper the hole becomes,” he said.
Mr Patel has no rental costs as he owns the building but, he said: “I’m completely maxed out and next year’s forecast shows I will be out of business in two to three year’s time.”
