There has been a huge increase in the number of independent schools were girls are playing football
But while the landscape is changing, Mr Rollings believes the independent sector still currently lags behind what state schools can offer young players, compared to sports like cricket.
“I think maintained schools in terms of resource, with the possible exception of time, probably have mature programs and a better setup to deliver soccer than independent schools.”Steve Perkins became head of football at Millfield School in Somerset, one of the leading UK independent schools for boys and girls, after 15 years at the FA.
“We’ve got over 100 girls playing football now. Our first team girls will play on the same pitches as the first team boys,” Mr Perkins told“We’ll have showcase games either on the main pitch on the school site, or pitch one at a Kingweston [campus]. We’ve had Premier League men’s academies train on that pitch and they say it’s the best pitch that they’ve played on this year.
Games at the school, where boarding fees for senior school students are almost £48,000 a year, are also filmed with the girls sometimes wearing GPS devices so coaching staff can gather physical data in a way that is similar to some of the UK’s top academies.
