Nearly 48,000 UC graduate students poised to shut down many classes, labs and research with strike
Among the claims of graduate students: “We teach the majority of the classes.” “We grade more papers than any faculty member there is.” “UCSD is heavily dependent on graduate students to both teach classes and conduct research.” Issues of faculty workload and pay and how they intersect with those of academic workers are ripe for an investigation by journalists equipped to take a deep dive into what can be a Byzantine UC bureaucracy.The teaching assistants work an average of 15 to 20 hours a week. An average hourly rate of over $22 — or $24,000 a year — is good money for what they do.
