Opinion by E.J. Dionne Jr.: Ukraine’s torment cannot become just one more media sensation
Biden deserves more credit for his handling of Ukraine and Putin than many Republicans are giving him, but they have every right to argue with his choices. For that matter, so do Democrats.But it’s worth remembering that Vandenberg offered his famous sound bite at a moment of crisis, when the postwar world was coming to terms with Joseph Stalin’s designs on Eastern European nations destined to be under Soviet domination for more than four decades.
Fortunately, Putin’s Russia is not in as powerful a position as Stalin’s was, and the country’s current dictator badlyNonetheless, the crisis the democracies collectively face now is the most dangerous they have confronted since the Berlin Wall came down. We have a right to more than politics as usual from our elected officials. And as citizens, we have an obligation not to let our attention flag. We cannot treat the torment of Ukraine as just one more media sensation that we allow to fade away.
