Silicon Valley companies excel at many things, but there’s little evidence their expertise extends to designing ingenious new systems for controlling political speech.
That’s why Facebook was wise to confirm last month that it won’t try to police the ads of politicians for false statements as it does ordinary ads. Facebook’s vice president of global affairs and communications Nick Clegg wrote that the company does not believe its role is to “prevent a politician’s speech from reaching its audience and being subject to public debate and scrutiny.”
