That mouse has a long literary history. The line refers to the first scene in William Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.” During a cold night Barnardo asks Francisco, “Have you had quiet guard?” Francisco replies, “Not a mouse stirring.”
