The lawmakers visited Lucio to update her about their efforts to stop her April 27 execution. The lawmakers say they are troubled by Lucio’s case and believe her execution should be stopped as there are legitimate questions about whether she is guilty.

There’s no question that 2-year-old Mariah Alvarez’s death in 2007 was a tragedy. When her family found her unresponsive in their home, they called 9-1-1. They told police that days before, the toddler had fallen down a flight of stairs. Police immediately fixated on Melissa as a criminal abuser whose actions directly led to the death of little Mariah.

Our appeal for clemency is a bipartisan effort and asks that no innocent life is taken by the state of Texas.

State Rep. Joe Moody said that although they were initially told Wednesday's visit would have to be non-contact according to the rules for death row inmates, the lawmakers ultimately were allowed to be in the same room with Lucio and were even able to hug her. Moody said he asked Lucio to lead the final prayer that ended the meeting.
