The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality needs to do more monitoring, not less, during disasters. That’s when our communities are most vulnerable and when pollution levels can be highest. When families are dealing with crises, they should be able to rely on real-time, robust air monitoring and, ideally, an alert or text message that notifies them when pollution is high enough to warrant action, such as sheltering in place or evacuating.
