Opinion: Saskatchewan should ditch RCMP for provincial police force skpoli

In a recent policy brief for the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy entitled “Reforming the RCMP: The Path Forward,” we set out the case for a fundamental, not incremental, reform of the RCMP to meet the policing needs of today. Provincial policing is what actually engages a large majority of RCMP officers and staff, yet it is something no national police force does in any major country. The structure itself is the impediment to policing success, meeting neither federal nor provincial needs or priorities.

Or is it time to put provincial policing under the full authority of the provincial attorney-general, and create a modern, effective police force for Saskatchewan in the 21st century? A Saskatchewan focus on the safety and security needs of communities and on policing priorities is in the best interests of the people of this province..

But the province’s finances are very different today than they were in 1928, and Ottawa might well be open to transitional financing arrangements with provinces, especially given its own priority to refocus the RCMP on federal policing.Article content The StarPhoenix welcomes opinion articles.
