Opinion: Opposing views as federal program for school lunch expansion appears to be ending [Opinion]
Re “School lunch expansion appears near end” : As the Biden administration and congressional Democrats wring their collective hands over the possibility that free and reduced fee meals for school kids might end, I think back to my childhood.
I was raised in a Navy family in Imperial Beach. While we didn’t think of ourselves as poor, by any definition of today’s standards, we were. But my folks were always able to put together some type of sandwich, a piece of fruit and enough money for me to buy a carton of milk. There was no breakfast served at any school, as it was assumed your parents would provide that.
So what has changed? Nothing that makes any sense to me. Society is not responsible for the feeding and care of anyone’s family, with few exceptions. If people choose to have children, they should also accept the parental and financial responsibility that comes with that choice.
Republicans, please write to this paper and say you are among those who will not take this money. I ask the Union-Tribune to let us know how many thousands of letters it gets from these real Republicans.
