Opinion: How are San Diegan's reducing their carbon footprints on Earth Day 2023? [Opinion]
The notion that La Jolla should become its own city has been around for many decades and is back in the news with a push by the group Incorporate La Jolla. Would you support or oppose that and why?Americans are the consummate consumers. We are brainwashed to consume, throw away, and consume some more. The more we spend on single-use items, the more these items are produced. Spending is voting. It is important to me to be aware of how I vote with my dollars.
Perhaps that tattoo would be chasing arrows representing recycling or some mythological symbol about birth-growth-death and rebirth again. But, whatever the tattoo ended up being, it would be my statement to myself to be mindful of my own personal carbon footprint and to practice conservation whenever I can. I believe my contribution matters. My decision to not become a father, back in my breeding plumage days, is doing and will do, more for the planet than anything else possible.
More importantly, these personal changes may lead us to believe we are “doing our part” and that this is enough. “I recycle, I bike everywhere. I’m good!” This is precarious thinking. In fact, doing these personal “feel good” actions may distract us from the political changes we need. When enough citizens demand action and positive change from our government, we have the power to alter the climate trajectory.
I think it’s important for a food recovery hierarchy to be implemented in grocery stores and restaurants. Food sources should be limited to reduce waste, but if there’s still waste, then food should be donated, used for energy, or composted.
