Another young veteran who had witnessed unspeakable horrors in his combat tours would also come to visit. His injuries were mental, not physical. He was extremely uncomfortable in crowds — the only place he felt comfortable was at our post. One day, I asked him if he wanted to talk to the explosive ordnance disposal officer. He emphatically said no. He said he knew there were other veterans there with similar experiences to his, and it was comforting enough to be in their presence.
On another day, we had a lady come in with a spry, older gentleman. She said he wanted to “have a bump with the boys,” and that she would pick him up in a couple of hours. He was a World War II vet and had just moved in with his daughter. As his cheeks grew pinker after each round, he regaled us with priceless stories from his time in the service. His daughter returned, he got up and firmly shook each of our hands while looking straight in our eyes to tell us how much he enjoyed himself. It was a very special moment and we felt it.
