Opinion: Children should not be pawns in the mask debate culture war [Opinion]
” : Isn’t it so heartwarming to see parents use their children as pawns in the school mask mandate issue?
First, San Diego Unified School District and other districts are bound by state mandate. Second, what a selfish act to not want to protect those who cannot be vaccinated. Third, did those parents ask their students if the mask was such a big deal to wear? I’m a classroom aide at a middle school, and we have very few problems with our students. They understand it is for the greater good of the community. I wish these parents understood that.Sacrificing for the common good seems to be too much for many in today’s world. During World War II, even children were asked to ration what they consumed and were given ration books to comply.
The idea that wearing a mask in school is too much of a sacrifice boggles the mind. When did it become too much to do the right thing to help protect others? When did it become too important to “let them breathe” but not important enough to let others breathe who were susceptible to the ravages of COVID-19? What lessons are some parents and school superintendents teaching our children?
The “Golden Rule” and the idea of acting for the good of others seems to be another casualty of the personal rights and freedom movement. Thankfully, our predecessors understood that coming together, albeit with many tough sacrifices, made the community stronger and even helped to end the tyranny sought by Adolf Hitler. This war on COVID-19 should have made us stronger and taught lifelong lessons that would make any school district and parent proud.
