Opinion: As 2024's World Design Capital, the San Diego-Tijuana region will be part of a renaissance [Opinion]

To help meet this challenge, this Sept. 2, Vanguard Culture, a local nonprofit dedicated to advancing San Diego’s creative industries, is partnering with World Design Capital San Diego-Tijuana 2024 to produce the— a one-of-a-kind visual and performing arts festival that will transform numerous urban areas of the Commercial Street corridor in Logan Heights with multi-sensory art interventions by creatives from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.

But greater impact and possibility lies in the ability of the region’s creative sector, elected officials, design leaders and government agencies to step up to the challenge and shine as a community for a world audience in 2024. In fact, the potential impact of cultural tourism dollars long term could be transformative for the region. Studies repeatedly show thatin the cities they visit than traditional tourists.

Some of that has already begun and the community is starting to take notice. According to Jonathon Glus, executive director for arts and culture for the city of San Diego, “It was quite moving to see the community come together at theto welcome [World Design Organization] leadership during the bid process.

According to World Design Capital San Diego-Tijuana 2024 executive director Carlos de la Mora, “Being named ... is so much more than just a designation. It is a tool for transformation. Together we will work to ensure that everything we do in 2024 will leave a lasting and meaningful legacy that will positively impact our region for years to come.”

At the heart of a strong program for the event is what our creative community has needed all along, and especially in a post-pandemic world — audacity. We can no longer function with a pre-pandemic goal in mind. We need to envision and implement a future so bold, so transformative, that it can only be done through audacious collaboration and creativity.
