,” : Unlike this article’s writers, I wondered how many Americans truly remember this event beyond its obvious loss of life. In the attack’s immediate aftermath, the mantra was “never again.” A few short years later that commitment lapsed to “never forget.” Now there is just a hope that Americans will “remember it.”

There is no question that family and friends of the victims, along with the many heroic first responders, will never forget. Millions of others will continue to mark the anniversary on emotional and/or political grounds. But beyond that, the sense of urgency to take serious and massive action to try to ensure that “never again” could such a horrific terrorist attack strike our shores has all but evaporated.

,” : This past Sunday we remembered the courage, sacrifice and loss among the New York City fire and police departments and so many others on 9/11.

Maybe the Chronicle could give them a shout-out in “Thumbs” to acknowledge their display of duty and courage every bit on a par with their brothers in the FDNY.
