Rain fell all day, kept falling late at night.
In the Washington region, where many dry places had scarcely seen rain for weeks, Saturday and the tropical storm named Ophelia brought long wet hours of alternating downpour and drizzle.
As of 10 p.m. all three of the area’s official measuring stations had recorded a solid inch of precipitation, as rain fell from early morning to late night, with drops flung about by 30 mph wind gusts.Trees toppled in Montgomery County, Md., blocking some roads. A tree fell into a house in the 3500 block of Overlook Lane in Northwest Washington.
By 8 p.m. Saturday about 1.40 inches of rain had fallen both in Washington and at Washington Dulles International Airport, two dozen miles away in Virginia’s Fairfax County. In both places, rain still came down as it had in almost every hour since midnight Friday. Some hours saw as little as 0.01 inch, but it seemed constant and unceasing.
