Review: Pixar’s 'Onward'—about elfin brothers on a quest to reconnect with their dead father—lacks the studio’s usual wizardry
With few exceptions, the Pixar logo with the little Luxo lamp has signified something special—not a guarantee of a masterpiece, although we’ve had plenty of those, but an assurance of humanity, distinctive wit, joyous audacity, startling originality.
“Onward,” the latest feature from Pixar Animation Studios via Disney, is insistently unspecial. It’s enjoyable enough if you don’t mind machine-made entertainment, but so desperate to please that it wears out its welcome long before the closing credits.
