Belfast Live readers have their say as GP warns system is on the brink of collapse
A GP has warned that the Northern Irish healthcare system is under threat, as more and more doctors leave the profession - and Belfast Live readers have been sharing their own experiences of the creaking network of NHS surgeries in our comments section. Dr Ian Lalsingh spoke out after his last day as a GP partner in Larne last week, joining a growing number of practices handing their contracts back to the Department of Health.
"The NHS is on its knees generally but general practice is collapsing bit by bit in an uncontrollable fashion really. Unfortunately if general practice fails, the whole of the NHS is going to fail."Commenter Godsperfectidiot writes: “I've known Dr Lalsingh from when he started in Larne and I can honestly say that he is one of the hardest working GPs in the area.
Takingiteasy62 agrees with Dr Lalsingh: “There are no longer enough doctors to fill the appointments. If it was so lucrative, why does no-one apply to fill the vacancy?” Ouleejit thinks that the decline of the GP system is irreversible: “The health system throughout the UK is collapsing for one reason only. That is the intention. It will happen in N.I. first which I why you see private hospitals expanding here. If there is another Tory government in Westminster it will happen fast, but even if there is a Labour one little will change here. The move to an insurance based model is well underway.
