Rishi Sunak might understandably choose to keep any celebrations of today’s first anniversary of him becoming Prime Minister low-key.
His 12 months in office have been politically and economically turbulent, and his chances of winning power if he goes to the country in about a year’s time look increasingly slim, especially so because of his Government’s failure to boost the fortunes of the north. Despite being a Yorkshire MP, Mr Sunak has done far too little for the county he calls home.
Indeed, his decision to cancel the northern leg of HS2 earlier this month has further undermined the prospects of the major economic revival that this huge area of the country needs if it is to prosper and give its young people the chances they deserve. Mr Sunak should have no doubt about the extent of voter disenchantment with the Government in his own backyard.
