BREAKING: Rishi Sunak has said around eight million of the lowest income households will be sent a one-off payment of £650.
Boris Johnson apologised for the breaches but refused to step down, despiteMr Sunak insisted that the government is ready to support those struggling to pay bills.
On help for pensioners, Mr Sunak told the Commons: ‘From the autumn we will send over eight million pensioner households who receive the winter fuel payment an extra one-off pensioner cost-of-living payment of £300. ‘So to help the six million people who receive non-means tested disability benefits we will send them, from September, an extra one-off disability cost-of-living payment worth £150.
Ben Harrison, director of the Work Foundation at Lancaster University, said: ‘The one-off payment of £650 to low income households is significant, and as it will be made via the benefits system it will land direct in the bank accounts of those who need it most.
