As cabinet secretary to three prime ministers, Case is open to the charge of not having wielded the authority he might have done
The headline on the cabinet secretary’s, faithfully reproduces one of his answers: “Simon Case: ‘The thing I found most difficult in 2022? Telling the PM the Queen had died’”.
Indeed the Scholar sacking, and Case’s failure, for whatever reason, to stop or even delay it, made the cabinet secretary the subject of widespread flak in and around Whitehall. In a letter to, Sir David Normington, former permanent secretary at the Home Office, wrote in deadly understatement that it was “disappointing” that the cabinet secretary has “acquiesced in the sacking and once again failed to stand up for the values of the civil service”.
We don’t, incidentally, know what was discussed and by whom when Johnson appointed Nadhim Zahawi – now inover his tax affairs – as Chancellor. But Zahawi’s allies are reported as saying he discussed tax issues with the Cabinet Office’s ethics and propriety team at the time. No doubt the inquiry which Rishi Sunak has now ordered will shed some light on whether the cabinet secretary himself was involved and what if any recommendations he made.
