Two Coast Guard crews searched through the night for survivors of a floatplane that crashed Sunday afternoon in the Puget Sound, killing one passenger and leaving nine others missing
.Officials said theythat a seaplane with nine adults and one child on board crashed around 3 p.m. local time Sunday in Mutiny Bay off Whidbey Island. At the time, the plane was en route from Friday Harbor, a resort on San Juan Island in the Sound, to an airport in the Seattle suburb of Renton, Wash., about 80 miles away. The crash site is about halfway between the two.
At first light Monday, dozens of aircraft and vessels from various agencies—including a search and rescue plane from Sacramento, Calif.—were deployed to continue the search, said Chief William Colclough, assistant public affairs officer for the 13th Coast Guard District in Seattle.Seaplanes are a popular choice for tourists in the area, with multiple scheduled flights daily between Friday Harbor and Seattle-area airports.the cause of the crash, the agency said, which is still unknown.
