The iconic sports car maker will be working with aircraft company Boeing on future airborne mobility.

“Porsche is looking to enhance its scope as a sports car manufacturer by becoming a leading brand for premium mobility. In the longer term, this could mean moving into the third dimension of travel,” says Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG. “We are combining the strengths of two leading global companies to address a potential key market segment of the future.
The two firms plan on putting together an international team to assess aspects of urban air mobility, including whether there will, in fact, be a viable market for upscale flying cars in the not-too-distant future. A Porsche Consulting study conducted last year suggests the urban air mobility market will take off, so to speak, after 2025.
Porsche, Boeing and Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences are said to be developing a prototype for an electric flying car that would be able to take off and land vertically. The rendering that came with the announcement looks something like a 911 that’s been re-imagined with wings and aircraft engines, and is landing on the roof of what’s likely Wayne Enterprises headquarters.
