Courtesy PhotoThe Woodlands boys track and field team is sending thrower to the University Interscholastic League state track and field meet this weekend for the 10th consecutive season, and 12th time in the last 13.
Blakeslee, who also plays defensive end and tight end on the football field, stands 6-foot-5 at 245 pounds. He is going to Air Force to play football and throw. “Because of the experience I have, I’m definitely more relaxed about going to state,” Blakeslee said. “My sophomore year, I didn’t perform well at all because I was so anxious and nervous. Last year, I did a lot better because I had that year under my belt. Now, hopefully, I can take those two years and go get first.Blakeslee finished ninth at state as a sophomore, his first year under Miears’ tutelage.
“I think he’s gotten a lot better out of the back of the ring and his overall balance to start the throw,” Miears said. “His sophomore year, he kind of had to do some gimmicky stuff out of the back of the ring to be successful at a couple of meets. He’s gotten a lot better getting all the way around that first spin to allow for his right foot to touch down in the middle of the ring.”
“Typically for me, I’ll throw my best throw on my third or fourth throw and then it goes down,” Blakeslee said. “I’m hoping I’ll be able to keep going up, instead of hitting my best throw and then declining.”
