Platforms vying for subscriber loyalty and cultural clout have put huge bets on fantasy series, including HBO’s “House of the Dragon” and Amazon Studios’ “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”Unlike worlds typical of science fiction, settings in the “high fantasy” genre tend to use medieval times as a jumping-off point.
