It was fun, sexy, had a feel-good ending, and Koch was in control throughout, her commanding stage persona never waning.-style asides lending a rapid-fire cheekiness to the opening segments. And we find out if she finally secured that threesome.
Does turning 30 mean a new, mature era for Koch? She has always had a mature stage presence – an arresting and assured style of performance that puts audiences at ease. Paired with her tightly written, punchline-heavy material, it makes for slick shows. Unusually, tonight, she tells us she messed up her entrance and gives us a sincere aside about, explaining that she wanted to joke about the topic to make people feel less alone. But within the context of, this doesn’t throw things off.
Drawing on her recent return to academia, where her thesis explored parasocial relationships – when strangers develop attachments to people they’ve only encountered online – Koch asks what we can make of the fragments people offer up on social media.
Koch is a skilled storyteller, taking us to New Zealand and Japan as she shares the tale of a wedding fling that could be something more. She pulls us into fun asides about a llama, a letter from the NHS, her unusually spaced-out siblings , and the Berlin Wall. It builds to a poignant moment of reflection on the stories we tell about our lives – not over-egged, a lovely contrast to her brasher opening – and an excellent payoff to the show’s central story.
