Gill answered a vacancy in the paper and never looked back
A Liverpool librarian who has seen generations grow up in the city is celebrating 50 years in the job.
"My aunt saw in the paper that they were recruiting for the library and she showed my mum and then she said what about this. I went in for an interview and they shook my hand after a chat and said when can you start. Gill later worked for 14 years in Garston, Speke for one year, Netherley's school library for six months, then Hunts Cross and Allerton for 20 years before working in the new Millennium Centre of Lee Valley Library. Seeing much change, before the days of researching information online or reading books digitally, how libraries operated and how the public used them were unrecognisable to how we live today.
"Computers, we got them later than a lot of other places because I remember people from London used to be amazed. We were sort of more of less into the late 80 and 90s before we started getting them. "The libraries were heavily used on the reading side but now it’s a lot more the technology. But we have seen a revival."Through the decades, Gill has seen generations pass through numerous libraries in the city. Stand-out moments for Gill include leading story sessions for youngsters and taking out books to the elderly in the community and hearing their fascinating stories from years gone by.
