Kyle McCord started off his homecoming game against Rutgers by breaking an Ohio State record.
McCord closed out a 24-10 win over Wisconsin last week by completing all seven of his second-half passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. That efficiency carried over to the first half against Rutgers where he completed his first 11 passes for 64 yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to Gee Scott Jr.
Those combined 18-straight completions broke a record set by C.J. He ended the game 32 of 35 for 433 yards and six touchdown while Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Garrett Wilson all has over 100 receiving yards.
That game pushed Stroud to the front of the Heisman Trophy race, even if he’d lose that lead the following week against Michigan. It broke a J.T. Barrett’s record set in 2017 when he completed his final 16 passes in a 39-38 comeback win over Penn State. On the night he was 33 of 39 for 328 yards and four touchdowns.
Both of those record-breaking performances came against top-10 opponents at home. McCord’s wasn’t quite that but still helped the Buckeyes win one game and take an early 7-0 win in another.
