In a nearly unanimous vote, Ohio House lawmakers came together to eliminate a policy that would hold back third graders who struggle to read.
The Third Grade Reading Guarantee is the major program public schools use to make sure students are keeping up with reading, and those who don't can be held back.
He and his fellow teachers explain this causes anxiety and insecurity, and can impact the student's academic future negatively. This is why they are thrilled with the Ohio House. "Are the students who are not proficient readers going to get the supports and interventions that they need to be successful readers in the future?" asked Lisa Gray with Ohio Excels.
"The Third Grade Reading Guarantee is important," Senate President Matt Huffman said."We think the evidence has shown that the kids who are retained do better."
