The Diamondbacks decided to trade Daulton Varsho, in part, because they believed in Alek Thomas and Jake McCarthy.
By keeping them, the Diamondbacks are placing different sorts of bets on the two incumbents. Both make for intriguing storylines.
A year ago, it would have been hard to imagine McCarthy upending the outfield pecking order this dramatically, but he does not sound like he is taking much for granted. Once a prospect list darling — he entered last year ranked 32nd overall on Baseball America’s Top 100 — he jumped to a fast start after his promotion in May, but his production fizzled over the final few months, culminating in his demotion to Triple-A Reno the final week of the season.
As for getting sent down, Thomas said he understood the decision. He knew he was struggling. He had good conversations with his dad, his agent and manager Torey Lovullo, and he quickly got to work. He was in the lineup for Reno the day after being optioned.
