Orange lightsabers are very rare in Star Wars canon, but two villains in Ahsoka are shown to be wielding them - and there's one canon explanation.
The villains in Ahsoka are shown to be wielding incredibly rare orange lightsabers – but Obi-Wan Kenobi fought with one before the Skywalker saga even began. In the non-canon Star Wars continuity, otherwise known as Legends, orange lightsabers were more common, though still used sparingly. They were mostly wielded by Force users who hadn’t fully committed to the light side or the dark.

In the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor games, Cal Kestis can be customized with an orange lightsaber; in Survivor, there is even a bounty hunter that wields an orange-yellow tinted one. The other canon instance of an orange lightsaber being used in Star Wars is much more surprising, and certainly less well-known.
During the novel’s climax, Obi-Wan is forced to use his lightsaber against a Pijali guard, but is shocked to see that his blade has changed from blue to orange. In the end, it is revealed that someone switched out the kyber crystal in his lightsaber for a kohlen crystal, hoping to render it useless in combat. Though the orange blade of Obi-Wan’s lightsaber is weaker than usual, it is still capable of inflicting damage, as it cuts through a kohlen-powered shield and wounds the man beneath it.
Could Ahsoka's Villains Be Using Kohlen-Powered Lightsabers? The dark Jedi in Ahsoka – Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati – both wield orange lightsabers. That is a deliberate choice, one likely linked to their backstory and motivations. As outside the games, no canon kyber crystal has ever produced an orange lightsaber blade, Baylan and Shin may be wielding lightsabers powered by kohlen instead.
Despite Obi-Wan’s lightsaber being weaker for a time, that does not mean every kohlen crystal is the same. In the Ahsoka trailer, Baylan and Shin’s lightsabers seem to be just as powerful as regular lightsabers – perhaps there are different types of kohlen crystals. Kyber crystals found from alternate sources can differ in size, power, and appearance, and even affect the type of blade that emanates from the lightsaber hilt.
