District hopes to avoid another COVID surge after spring break, will reassess mandate in mid-April
Although the state is lifting its indoor mask mandate for schools on Monday, Oakland Unified is telling its students, teachers and all campus visitors “Not so fast.”
“We are concerned about a potential post-Spring Break surge and recognize that some individuals on District campuses will continue to need to mask ,” the district’s COVID Safety Team wrote in a memo to school families and the public. While many school districts in the region and across California are following the state’s advice in allowing students and teachers to remove their masks, Oakland Unified isn’t the only district being extra cautious. Sacramento City Unified has announced it won’t lift its mask mandate until after Sacramento County falls under a certain threshold of community virus spread for four straight weeks.
“Children across the country have been mask optional for over a year. California has lifted the mandates for adults, for kids and say they’re lifting it for schools across the state,” a mother of three district students told the board. “Stop the craziness, follow the science.” Though Alameda County health officials fell in line with the state to give schools and childcare centers the option to drop mask mandates, they are still “strongly recommending” that children continue to wear masks.
