Oakland native Marcus Gardley sets ‘Lear’ within the upheaval of San Francisco’s Fillmore district in the 1960s.
George Bernard Shaw wrote those words about “Heartbreak House,” and now playwright Marcus Gardley can say the same. California Shakespeare Theater is premiering the Oakland native’s new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear.”
Unusually, this season has consisted entirely of world premiere adaptations of Shakespeare. In May, Cal Shakes debuted Karen Zacaraías’ bilingual “Romeo y Juliet,” rescheduled from the 2020 season. “I hadn’t done a play since the pandemic,” Gardley says. “I started working in film and television, and due to the pandemic it’s just hard to make theater. And so I had a long chat with Eric and I said, for me it’s really important that when I come back, I come back to my hometown.”
Gardley set his adaptation in San Francisco’s Fillmore district in the 1960s, touching on details such as the Black Panthers and families losing their homes through eminent domain.
