For the second time in a month, hundreds of parents rushed from across Oakland to their child’s East Oakland school with only one question running in their minds: Is my child safe?
The scene played out in stark horror Wednesday as a shooting that left six people injured rocked a campus that houses several schools in the Eastmont Hills neighborhood. The incident came almost exactly a month to the day after gunfire rang out at a school just three miles down the hill in deep East Oakland —and a 12-year-old student facing criminal charges.
They arrived to find a chaotic scene, one where all of the victims were still alive and no children were among the gunshot victims. Little else was known about the people wounded in Wednesday’s hail of gunfire, though at least one of the people shot appears to have been a security guard hired by a charter school on the sprawling, four-school campus, according to Oakland City Councilmember Loren Taylor.
“I was scared about everybody — this is bad news,” Allahabi said. The anxiety of the moment only faded when he hugged his son. “When I see my son, I said, ‘Thank you, God.’ ” “To have a shooting in our schools is beyond belief here in Oakland,” he added. “We shouldn’t have guns in our schools to begin with.”
