The A’s will start two players acquired in the Olson and Chapman trades.
Elvis Andrus and Stephen Piscotty resume their positions at shortstop and right field, respectively, but two young players acquired in the Olson and Matt Chapman trades also earned Opening Day nods. Kevin Smith, the 25-year-old infielder acquired in the Chapman trade, will start at third base. Cristian Pache, who came to Oakland in the Olson trade, will man center field and bat ninth.
As manager Mark Kotsay announced earlier this week, Frankie Montas will be the A’s Opening Day starting pitcher. He’ll face a Phillies lineup that begins with power-hitting outfielder Kyle Schwarber and features former MVP Bryce Harper. Free agent addition Nick Castellanos will be Philadelphia’s designated hitter in the cleanup spot, batting for righty Aaron Nola.
