The A’s used a franchise-record 64 players last season, and it would be surprising if they don’t come close to that number again in 2023.
There will be 26 players on the roster when the A’s face Shoeni Ohtani, Mike Trout and the Angels at the Coliseum on March 30, and then the evaluations and depth-chart jockeying really pick up.
Blackburn, the lone A’s All-Star last season, figured to be the leading candidate to be named Opening Day starter, but he might not be ready when camp breaks because of cracked fingernail on his throwing hand. That could mean that the highly-anticipated Fujinami-Ohtani matchup could come as soon as Opening Day.
Muller and Waldichuk are considered the youngsters closest to being ready, but have had mixed Cactus League results and might not break camp in the rotation. Tarnok was impressive in his first few outings, but is out with tingling in his thumb. James Kaprrielian is coming off shoulder surgery and might be brought back slowly.
Soderstrom, the top prospect in the system, has been a star in camp, but it might be a rush – he’s only played nine games above Double-A and has played more first base than catcher in the minors. Pozo is the only other catcher with experience in the majors, playing in 21 games with the Rangers in 2021.
