OAKLAND — There was Trevor May, the Oakland A’s highest-paid player, standing on the mound at the Coliseum on a Sunday in early April and wondering if this was the end of his decade-long baseball career.“For the first time since my debut ,” he said. “And my debut was bad. I don’t want to live like that anymore.”
Ten days after May walked four batters in a game for the first time since 2014, the A’s placed him on the 15-day injured list with “issues related to anxiety.” “I’m really proud of the way baseball has put mental health in the foreground, even more so over the last five or six years,” said Dr. Larry Westreich, MLB’s lead consultant on behavioral health and addiction. “There’s no shame in having a mental health problem. Society has changed in that way, it’s not just us. But I think we’re riding that wave.”
