Jim Boeheim deserved more in retirement from Syracuse, writes DanaONeilWriter. But this is what he chose. He has been and is, even in the end, his own worst enemy.

Boeheim’s entire adult life is entwined with Syracuse. The last time he did not play for or work for the university was the spring of his senior year in high school — 61 years ago. He came to campus as a walk-on in 1962, graduated in 1966, and immediately took a $2,000 job as a golf coach and unpaid basketball coach. Aside from a few games with the Scranton Miners of the Eastern Professional Basketball League, he has never worked for another employer.

Because it is time. The return on his lifelong investment in the program is diminishing to the point of evaporating. His insistence that he stay on has run the risk of destroying all that he has built. The Orange the last few years have been worse than bad; they’ve been irrelevant. Syracuse has just two 20-plus win seasons in the last nine years, and even the two Sweet 16 runs had more the whiff of an unexpected mid-major run than the March stomps Syracuse used to be known for.

Plenty will be happy to see him go, seeing this as a perfect good riddance to a miserable man. To me, it’s nothing but sad. Sad that it ended this way. Sad that no one saved both parties from the inevitable messy divorce. Boeheim was a fabulous coach. He did not get to the Hall of Fame by accident. That, too, likely will get lost in this very abrupt departure. Will anyone remember the heyday now, the glory days when Syracuse vs. Georgetown, Syracuse vs. St. John’s, and Syracuse vs.
