Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order on Monday protecting gender-related healthcare.

The executive order, which Adams announced on Twitter, states New York City"has a longstanding commitment to protecting all New Yorkers' right to privacy and bodily autonomy" and that gender-transition healthcare is"essential to the health and wellness of many transgender and non-binary people."Adams's order comes as 20 states have banned gender-transition care for those under 18 years old, according to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

Under the order, no mayoral or city resources will be used to detain people suspected of receiving or providing gender surgeries or related healthcare services in New York City. The city will also not cooperate with an investigation of a person who received such care outside of New York that"would have been lawful had it occurred in the State of New York.
