In the wake of a violent year for bodegas, the $1M fund will foot the bill for equipment like cameras and panic buttons.

"These establishments do so much to keep us healthy, fed, and happy, and now we are stepping up to keep them safe," Septimo said at a press conference Monday. The hope is to deter would-be robbers and protect bodegas who are often targets for such crimes. Many bodegas already have similar security measures in place, but Septimo says that's truly expensive is the upfront costs to buy and install things like cameras.
