The patient was distraught about his beloved dog, Boomer, that had been taken to a shelter.
A dog sits in the corner of his kennel at an animal shelter on Monday, Dec. 20, 2021. For a moment, a registered nurse in New York stood in the shoes of one of her favorite patients and responded to his plea to rescue his beloved dog Boomer from the pound. Boomer was his world. And she couldn’t say “no.”that Jennifer Smith said she received a 7 a.m. call at work the Monday after Thanksgiving from one of her favorite patients, John Burley.
When Burley asked Smith if she would take care of Boomer, her response was, “‘Of course, John. I will find Boomer and take care of him for you,’” CNN reported. The 60-year-old still had his own apartment where he lived alone with 12-year-old Boomer, a dog he’d adopted as a puppy. With most of his family living in another state, Burley had no one to care for his dog when he was hospitalized for pneumonia and lung problems, CNN stated.
“I told John I have a 13-year-old dog myself who I’ve had since a puppy, so I fully understand the panic. It made my heart sad for him and Boomer,” CNN quoted her as saying. So, after contacting various animal shelters, Smith located Boomer at the Rome Humane Society. She arranged to adopt him.
