Nov. 2022 Election: Q&A with Antonio Martinez, candidate San Diego City Council District 8 [Opinion]

. All communities have a right to clean and safe neighborhoods, free from toxins, pollutants and other environmental hazards that disproportionately impact District 8 residents.

A: SANDAG’s new mobility plan is a solid attempt to create a comprehensive and environmentally friendly blueprint to address the transportation challenges throughout the region. The problem is that, like with so many other “visionary” plans, the residents of District 8 are often excluded in the planning process and, consequently, the transportation projects that significantly impact our communities are shortchanged or put on the back burner. I am running to be in a position to change that.

A: First, we need more affordable housing developments, so we are not displacing San Diegans from their communities. This is where I differ from my opponent who has consistentlyaffordable and inclusionary housing measures. When elected, I will prioritize affordable housing and stop the displacement of families. We need to keep San Diego for San Diegans.

Q: What can realistically be done to address homelessness in the city? How would you try to accomplish it?in the nation. Homelessness is a complex issue and requires a complex answer to resolve. In addition to identifying new sources of funding for housing development and a focus on transit-oriented development, wraparound social service programs are also required for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

A: The 101 Ash Street deal is an absolute debacle that is costing San Diego taxpayers millions of dollars, and it is important that the city learns from its mistakes so as not to repeat them. I challenge anyone who has not had the opportunity to travel along this thoroughfare to do so, and I promise you the description I have made so far is a kind one in comparison to the harsh reality.

A: There’s nothing more important than keeping our neighborhoods safe. To lower emergency response times and ensure adequate police staffing in every community, we need to pay officers better so we keep experienced police and recruit new officers.
