It is estimated that cross-border dumping could be costing Nottinghamshire taxpayers over £400,000 a year
Nottinghamshire tips are "at risk of abuse" from people in neighbouring areas who are dumping their rubbish in the county to avoid strict rules at their own centres. A review carried out for Nottinghamshire County Council estimates that cross-border dumping from places like Lincolnshire and Rotherham could be costing the authority over £400,000 a year.
Beeston is again identified as a site currently vulnerable to cross-border tipping, alongside West Bridgford and Hucknall. The newly uncovered review says these three sites are vulnerable given how close they are to Nottingham, which only has one tip and which charges for DIY waste. Nottinghamshire County Council continues to consider which of its tips it might close in the coming years, with details to be set out in the autumn. The newly uncovered report contains three scenarios, the first of which would only keep four of the 12 current tips.
All these scenarios are identical to those presented to the group of councillors looking at the future of Nottinghamshire's tips at a 2023 meeting. Yet questions are being raised about why this group were not able to see the information in the 2022 review, especially given how much it cost.
