Three homes have been shut over the last two months
Nottinghamshire has got "more than enough" care homes despite a spate of closures across the county, a leading council health figure has said. At least three residential homes have closed over the last two months - with a further home in West Bridgford shutting just a year ago.
Melanie Williams, corporate director of adult social care and health at the county council, said this was an abnormal rate for Nottinghamshire, which would usually see one closure every other year before the Covid pandemic. However, she said cost of living increases had caused homes to struggle."We've had huge economic crises and cost of living increases and adult social care is particularly prone to that," she told Nottinghamshire Live.
"People who work in care are often at minimum wage or just above. There's huge competition for that market, for cleaners - Amazon depots and supermarkets," she said. Despite the recent closures, Ms Williams said there was no part of Nottinghamshire that did not have enough provision for residential homes. As of January 2023, the county council held contracts with 151 independent sector care homes, of which 63 offer nursing care.
