From indulgent fine dining to delicious hearty sandwiches, these are the spots to check out
There's no chance of getting bored when it comes to Nottingham's buzzing food and drink scene. The city has restaurants and cafes for all tastes - whether that's a spicy curry, a big juicy burger or a quintessentially English afternoon tea.
You cannot visit without trying the furikake prawn toast whose reputation precedes it. Chicken sando, kakiage, beef and black garlic mustard skewers and black sugar parfait are other must-try dishes.Tucked away down a side street, it would be easy to miss this gem belonging to MasterChef finalist Pete Hewitt. Nibble on small plates of hot butter calamari and loaded mutton rolls before getting down to the serious business of the main event of coconut-based curries or sweet and sour stir fries, served with genuine warmth and hospitality. It was ten years ago that The Times food critic Giles Coren put this Chinese restaurant on the map. "Without question the best Sichuan cooking I have had outside China," he wrote in his review.
The menu gives only the most basic of clues such as potato/caviar/ash and salmon tart #Japan. Expect the unexpected - the exquisite dishes explore taste, texture and temperature. You'll love certain ones, others may challenge you, but you're in for a stupendous meal that you'll never forget. Wine pairings are available or the sommeliers can suggest the perfect bottle to match. There's even drinks and cigar pairings to be enjoyed in a cosy hut in the garden.
Menus regularly change but to whet your appetite how about rump steak tagliata with rocket salad, heritage tomato, parmesan cheese, garlic mayo and capers followed by warm chocolate fondant and hazelnut ice cream. The rustic simplicity of Spanish tapas is elevated, adding a global twist, to create refined, sophisticated dishes that can be enjoyed within the atmospheric surroundings.
Diners can fill their boots with dishes such as jamon and manchego tortilla, cod tacos, and baby chorizo. There's a sizeable vegan section too with spiced aubergine and tomato tagine and Korean cauliflower. Visit on a Sunday for Baresca's version of a roast dinner, served on a sharing board with plenty of meat, potatoes and greens.
The sizeable dosas, packed with either lamb, chicken or masala, draw an 'ooh' when they arrive at the table. You'll find South Indian specials such as beef kizhi, wrapped in banana leaves, quail egg roast and oodles of Keralan seafood dishes, alongside the usual northern dishes of Punjabi karahi, lamb nihari, and chicken saag - all served by very pleasant and polite staff.Diners are treated to award-winning curries and a majestic experience.
Moving onto mains, there's a sizeable list of pasta, risotto, and meats but the restaurant really excels at fish and seafood dishes. Tagliatelle Montecarlo with monkfish, linguine crab and the signature stew with prawns, fish, mussels and calamari all deserve a special shout-out.Some say it's the best pizza in Nottingham. Neapolitan tradition is blended with New York sass to create pizza perfection in the cosy corner eatery decorated in red, white and green like the Italian flag.
The main-stay is tacos, which are served out of an open kitchen - tapas-style, arriving when they're ready at the table. The signature Al Pastor, packed with pork, pineapple and salsa verde, is a must-have. Small plates, or antojitos, feature too - amongst them tuna tostadas on crisp tortilla discs and chorizo quesadilla.
Lobster, mussels, king prawns, oysters - there's the lot plus the ultimate shellfish platter, a show-stopping array of the aforementioned seafood with the addition of crab claws and scallops too. But there's much more to the Lobster Pot than just seafood. The owner Chatchai draws on his Bangkok roots to incorporate dishes such as spring rolls, Thai-style duck, crispy pork belly, and spicy king prawn ga pow stir fry with jasmine rice.
Chefs also zhuzh up vegetables to make them really desirable so you might find wood-fired carrots with labneh and pomegranate or aubergine with tamarind curry sauce. One thing's for sure though - you'll always find the cheeseburger because everyone says it's sensational and the best ever. Remove it and there will be a riot.A restaurant with a difference, the food is cooked and served by hospitality students at Nottingham College.
The full English breakfast makes it a quality start to the day. The wood-fired pizzas are a good call and as well as the classic toppings, there's something a little different like the Wardorf, inspired by the famous salad with candied walnuts and apple. Binks Blue Burger scores ten out of ten - and should the burnt Basque cheesecake ever return to the menu it's a must.
A big success in the coffee world, this homegrown business has an enticing counter full of hearty savoury snacks and sweet treats to accompany the first class espresso, americano, Spanish latte or cortado. With three cafes in the city centre - each with an amusing A-boards outside - there's always one close at hand.
