Forest's record of picking a homegrown player in every senior matchday squad dates back to the 1940s - but is now in peril

On October 11, 1941, Forest lost 8-2 at Walsall and reports at the time listed the goalkeeper as H Ashley. One problem: there was nobody by that name on Forest’s books. A Nottingham Evening Post clipping from the Walsall vs Forest game that represents the last time the club did not field a homegrown player. There was a goalkeeper called Ashley Hunt, who had made his debut two years earlier, aged 17. Further investigation, however, showed he had died in barracks in November 1940.
