John Gallagher was jailed in 1979, following the savage murder of a butcher in Glasgow during a robbery.
John Gallagher was jailed for 20 years in 1979 for murdering a Glasgow butcher during a bungled burglary. Alongside accomplices, John Haig and David Cochrane, he attacked the victim Thomas Woods at his shop in the Gallowgate, bludgeoned him to death with iron bars before leaving with less than £100.
Gallagher has been shifted across various prisons in Scotland. In 1984, he was the ring-leader in a roof-top siege at Peterhead as lags protested conditions in the jail. In August 2015, after being released from jail, Gallagher was stabbed when he went to pick his wife Sylvia and daughter Charlie up from a cancer charity event at Broadsword Bar in Aberdeen ’s Tillydrone area.
In court, Gallagher branded Boyle a 'coward', who was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in jail. Following the court hearing Mrs Gallagher said the family had taken a long time to recover from their ordeal.“I could hardly breathe - I’m still on inhalers. I still can’t do too much because I get out of breath. I’ve to go back to the hospital on the 12th for an X-ray and scan.
