Have I, over the last decade, been entirely body-snatched by goop? 🖋️ Esther Walker for ipaperviews
I am always wowed by the very effective but basic monkey-see, monkey-do of celebrity or brand worship. I admit that I am helpless in the face of it. Like many people my age , I grew up in a 1980s, off-brand, DIY household and it has left me allergic to anything homespun or tatty. I just want everything to smell nice and be tidy: give me a swathe of ecru linen and a scented candle and I’m happy.
So, I find myself defending Paltrow in most controversies. I argue that Paltrow is attacked in bad faith and I strongly believe in live and let live. If goop sells Exfoliating Dark Spot Sleep Milk for $98, with a side of debatable science, who cares? But perhaps I do this because she appeals to my strong yearning for a clean, nice-smelling aesthetic. And I need that, I needWhile I’m pretty sure she is telling the truth about who skied into whom that day , I also need her to be telling the truth. For the sake of my ecru linen and my smelly candle. For the sake of my little goop-robot self.
