Northwestern University film professor Spencer Parsons is looking for answers after criminal charges were filed earlier this month against actor Alex Baldwin, who shot and killed a cinematographer on the set of a movie Baldwin was filming in New Mexico.
“I think that procedures were not followed,” Parsons said of the shooting. “That’s the baseline. The chance that one of these ‘prop weapons’ could ever possibly be loaded with real live bullets, this is obscene.”Baldwin, 64, and armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reid, were each charged with involuntary manslaughter on Jan. 19 in the October 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, during a rehearsal for the movie “Rust.” Baldwin is an actor and producer on the movie.
“I really have big questions about using an actual weapon for rehearsals,” said Parsons, associate professor and head of production at Northwestern University in the School of Communications Department of Radio/Television/Film. “I’m racking my brain for why this makes any sense in a ‘rehearsal context.”’
He also said directors and actors often prefer to use prop guns because when fired they have a recoil and muzzle flash which closely resemble the firing of a gun loaded with real bullets. Parsons doesn’t understand why a dummy weapon wasn’t used in rehearsals as crew isn’t paying the same amount of attention to a rehearsed scene as they would in the real thing.
