Northern Ireland is ill prepared for the extreme weather we’re seeing more often as a result of the climate crisis, says a Queen’s University expert.
“You often hear the phrase in the NHS when they talk about winter pressures... the phrase summer pressures is going to become much more common in the coming years.“It affects the vulnerable population much more but even fit and healthy young adults, when faced with extreme heat you are not acclimatised to, that heat is going to cause problems for them.
To stave off the worst of the climate crisis the world needs to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels by drastically reducing carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels. But he says attitudes to the crisis have to change. His message to politicians, firms and the public is “play your part”.
“There is more awareness than there was in the past in Northern Ireland... it’s spreading but it’s slow.”
